By Faith...

by Ron Horner

Hebrews 11:

1 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen.

2 For by it [faith] the elders obtained a good testimony [report].

3 By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.

4 By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain, through which he obtained witness that he was righteous, God testifying of his gifts; and through it he being dead still speaks.

    - Abel built an offering of his substance

Abel OFFERED

5 By faith Enoch was taken away so that he did not see death, "and was not found, because God had taken him"; for before he was taken he had this testimony, that he pleased God.

    - Enoch walked with God and was not for God took him

    - Enoch built an offering of his life

Enoch WAS RAPTURED

6 But without faith it is impossible to please Him, for he who comes to God must believe that He is, and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him.

    - Faith is required to please God – Enoch pleased God – Enoch walked by faith

7 By faith Noah, being divinely warned of things not yet seen, moved with godly fear, prepared an ark for the saving of his household, by which he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness which is according to faith.

Noah Built an ark

8 By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to the place which he would receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going.

Abraham Obeyed & Went

    9 By faith he dwelt in the land of promise as in a foreign country, dwelling in tents with Isaac and Jacob, the heirs with him of the same promise;

Abraham DWELT

10 for he waited for the city which has foundations, whose builder and maker is God.

Abraham WAITED

11 By faith Sarah herself also received strength to conceive seed, and she bore a child when she was past the age, because she judged Him faithful who had promised.

    - Sarah received strength to conceive

Her ability to conceive required the touch of God. Because she judged Him faithful who promised she was able to receive strength.

12 Therefore from one man, and him as good as dead, were born as many as the stars of the sky in multitude; innumerable as the sand which is by the seashore.

13 These all died in faith, not having received the promises, but having seen them afar off were assured of them, embraced them and confessed that they were strangers and pilgrims on the earth.

    - Faith sees things that are afar off.

    - Faith is the assurance (verse 1)

    - They SAW the promise, were ASSURED, EMBRACED, CONFESSED

14 For those who say such things declare plainly that they seek a homeland.

15 And truly if they had called to mind that country from which they had come out, they would have had opportunity to return.

16 But now they desire a better country, that is, a heavenly: wherefore God is not ashamed to be called their God: for he hath prepared for them a city.

17 But now they desire a better, that is, a heavenly country. Therefore God is not ashamed to be called their God, for He has prepared a city for them.

18 By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises offered up his only begotten son,

Abraham was tested

Abraham OFFERED ISAAC

19 of whom it was said, "In Isaac your seed shall be called," concluding that God was able to raise him up, even from the dead, from which he also received him in a figurative sense.

    - Abraham concluded that if God could give him a son once, He could do it twice!

20 By faith Isaac blessed Jacob and Esau concerning things to come.

Isaac BLESSED Jacob and Esau

    Jacob's Blessing:

Genesis 27:28  Therefore God give thee of the dew of heaven, and the fatness of the earth, and plenty of corn and wine:

29 Let people serve thee, and nations bow down to thee: be lord over thy brethren, and let thy mother's sons bow down to thee: cursed be every one that curseth thee, and blessed be he that blesseth thee.

    Esau's Blessing:
    39 And Isaac his father answered and said unto him, Behold, thy dwelling shall be the fatness of the earth, and of the dew of heaven from above;

40 And by thy sword shalt thou live, and shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt have the dominion, that thou shalt break his yoke from off thy neck.

21 By faith Jacob, when he was dying, blessed each of the sons of Joseph, and worshipped, leaning on the top of his staff.

Jacob BLESSED & WORSHIPPED

22 By faith Joseph, when he was dying, made mention of the departure of the children of Israel, and gave instructions concerning his bones.

Joseph DREAMED

23 By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden three months by his parents, because they saw he was a beautiful child; and they were not afraid of the king's command.

Moses Parents RESCUED Moses

24 By faith Moses, when he became of age, refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's daughter,

Moses REJECTED his natural inheritance for a spiritual one

25 choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God than to enjoy the passing pleasures of sin,

Moses chose affliction

26 esteeming the reproach of Christ greater riches than the treasures in Egypt; for he looked to the reward.

Moses esteemed the reproach of Christ

27 By faith he forsook Egypt, not fearing the wrath of the king; for he endured as seeing Him who is invisible.

Moses forsook Egypt

28 By faith he kept the Passover and the sprinkling of blood, lest he who destroyed the firstborn should touch them.

Moses kept the Passover

29 By faith they [the children of Israel] passed through the Red Sea as by dry land, whereas the Egyptians, attempting to do so, were drowned.

The Children of Israel crossed over

    - The children of Israel passed over by faith

     - The Egyptians did not use faith

30 By faith the walls of Jericho fell down after they were encircled for seven days.

The walls of Jericho fell –

    - An inanimate object responded to faith!

31 By faith the harlot Rahab did not perish with those who did not believe, when she had received the spies with peace.

Rahab did not perish because she received the spies

32 And what more shall I say? For the time would fail me to tell of Gideon and Barak and Samson and Jephthah, also of David and Samuel and the prophets:

33 who through faith subdued kingdoms, worked righteousness, obtained promises, stopped the mouths of lions,

34 quenched the violence of fire, escaped the edge of the sword, out of weakness were made strong, became valiant in battle, turned to flight the armies of the aliens.

Gideon was made strong out of weakness

Barak became valiant in battle (Judges 4:16)

Samson turned to flight the armies of the aliens

Jephthah defeated the Ammonites

David stopped the mouth of the lion

Samuel worked righteousness

35 Women received their dead raised to life again. And others were tortured, not accepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better resurrection.

Mary and Martha received Lazarus

Stephen was martyred

Women witness resurrection power
Others were martyred

36 Still others had trial of mockings and scourgings, yes, and of chains and imprisonment.

Others were mocked, scourged and bound

    37 They were stoned, they were sawn in two, were tempted, were slain with the sword. They wandered about in sheepskins and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

38 of whom the world was not worthy. They wandered in deserts and mountains, in dens and caves of the earth.

39 And all these, having obtained a good testimony through faith, did not receive the promise,

They obtained a good testimony

40 God having provided something better for us, that they should not be made perfect apart from us.

Chapter 12

1 Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,

Therefore –

    - Lay aside every weight and sin

     - Run with endurance the race before you

     It is not a sprint – it's a marathon!

When you begin in faith, be ready and willing to keep your faith extended for a long period of time.

American Christians are notorious for the short "burst of faith."
           - John Avanzini

    - Keep your faith extended until you have in your possession the object desired.

Faith is a servant! Because the object is "on the way" does not mean that the object has arrived!.
You "relax" your faith after the arrival of the object – not before the arrival.

    Matthew 8:5-13

13 And when Jesus was entered into Capernaum, there came unto him a centurion, beseeching him,

6  And saying, Lord, my servant lieth at home sick of the palsy, grievously tormented.

7  And Jesus saith unto him, I will come and heal him.

8  The centurion answered and said, Lord, I am not worthy that thou shouldest come under my roof: but speak the word only, and my servant shall be healed.

9  For I am a man under authority, having soldiers under me: and I say to this man, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it.

10 When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel.

11 And I say unto you, That many shall come from the east and west, and shall sit down with Abraham, and Isaac, and Jacob, in the kingdom of heaven.

12 But the children of the kingdom shall be cast out into outer darkness: there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth.

13 And Jesus said unto the centurion, Go thy way; and as thou hast believed, so be it done unto thee. And his servant was healed in the selfsame hour.

    - Great faith – in quantity and endurance (v.10)

2 looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Look unto Jesus

     - The Author of your faith
     - The Completer of your faith

Jude 20  Beloved, build up yourselves in your most holy faith praying in the Holy Spirit.
