Digging the Wells of Revival

Editor's Note:Digging the Wells of Revival by Lou Engle

The phrase "digging the wells of revival" was popularized a few years ago in the book by Lou Engle, Digging the Wells of Revival, published by Destiny Image. It explored the biblical understanding of the Old and New Testament wells and how they have contemporary allegorical application to the church today. The efforts of saints of times past, represent wells that were dug to provide healing, salvation, deliverance, etc. to an area. Without the digging of wells, the community could not survive. So it is today. Wells that were dug long ago, but have sinced been covered over or filled in by the debris of religion, sin, injustice, or whatever, need to be redug in this time, so that the life that flowed from those wells can once again flow.

If you are serious about seeing the move of God in your city, I would strongly recommend that you read Lou Engle's book. You can find it through our bookstore by clicking on the image to the right. It would be greatly beneficial to your intercessory efforts in this day and age.

Wilson County has experienced some significant moves of God throughout its history. Although all but forgotten by nearly everyone, research into the history of the area shows that in the early 1800's a revival occurred that lasted over ten years. Approximately thirty years later another revival occurred that is reported to also have lasted approximately ten years. This is significant by any standards.
Barton W. Stone
Additionally, Barton Stone, for whom Barton College is named was one of the primary leaders of what is known as the Cane Ridge Revival (Cane Ridge, Kentucky) which occurred in 1801. This revival was one of the most significant revivals in American church history. Reportedly approximately 30,000 attended with over 5,000 being converted to Christ during its duration. Many signs and wonders occurred that have only been repeated in revivals in recent years.

These wells of revival to which Wilson has been a part or is now connected to are part of the spiritual heritage of this area. We believe that God is ready to move again in a significant way here in Wilson and the surrounding area. We are praying, fasting, and interceding for just such a move of the Holy Spirit to occur. The wells of healing dug by Evangelist Oral Roberts who held two crusades here in the 1950s, or the reported campaign of Aimee Semple McPherson (of Angelus Temple fame) in the 1920s here. The late Wallace Heflin, brother of the late Ruth Heflin, also held a crusade here years ago. Other men and women of God have also held revivals here throughout the years.

Other wells have been dug here such as wells of writing, wells of invention, wells of music that must be redug in this time. Perhaps you've found yourself singing the old tune "His Eye Is On the Sparrow" while you've been in Wilson. The writer of that song lived in Wilson with her husband during World War I while he taught at Atlantic Christian College. Although the song was not written here, the spirit of the song has remained to this day. Mrs. Civilla Martin and her husband Walter also penned numerous other hymns such as "God Will Take Care of You" and "Going Home".

The late Irene Harrell wrote (or ghostwrote) a number of books as wells as established a book publishing company here. Prior to her work, Elder P.D. Gold, pastor of the Wilson Primitive Baptist Church and founder of what has become the Wilson Daily Times also published a magazine for the Primitive Baptist movement known as Zion's Messenger. Other writers have come from this city as well.

All of these differing wells need to be restored. It is in the wells that life comes forth from the water that flows from them. Join with us in digging or re-digging the wells of revival for this city. Revival is here!
